Do you think league of legends is a 'trap' ?

About 3 years ago when I turned 15 I started playing league of legends for fun. I'm a competitive type of person so this made this game really fun especially when I started getting good at it. After a year I started getting 'serious' and went from being bronze 4 to gold 1. I was 2-2 in my series and waited until the last day of the season to play. This was when riot had connectivity issues with cable isps and kept disabling ranked. I had a cable isp and I couldn't play my last game. So I ended season 3 gold 1 at 100 lp 2-2. I played my season 4 provisionals and I got placed in platinum 5 and I was in the same league as reginald and a lot of players who were diamond/challenger. I played until I climbed to platinum 2 100 lp and realized how much time I was wasting on the game. I took a 1-2 month break and made school my top priority because I was going to be graduating soon. By the time I graduated I was platinum 4 because I would only duo queue with my silver irl friend. I focused on real life more than the game for obvious reasons. I tried getting back into it recently, now the pick order is randomized so I never get my main role mid. It seems to me like riot doesn't want as much players climbing. I know I probably sound like one of those people who think they are better than everyone else but are placed in bronze and blame elo hell but I'm not. I just met someone through league who says he DROPPED out of college 1 year into his 2 year degree for networking just so he can try to get into diamond. He's gold 1 and had a diamond player coach him. He believes he is entertaining and skilled enough to make a living off this game. It's funny because that's the reason I started really trying at ranked. I had a fantasy of being a pro but soon realized it's as realistic as being a celebrity . I'm not trying to criticize the game but I think it's smart of riot to implant seeds in young naive teenagers such as myself to spend money/time on it hoping my fantasy will become reality . I know most of you probably think it's 100% our fault but you have to admit the whole professional gaming scene really stimulates your imagination. The thought of being paid to play video games is very nice. What are your thoughts? I believe it is possible to become good enough to get noticed but with the changes to pick order it makes me really skeptical. I suppose it is my fault to allow my mmr to plummet queuing with my friend .

Tl;dr: do you think this game is intentionally made to give players a false feeling that what they are doing is not a waste of time or am I just stupid ?

Also sorry for any grammatical/spelling errors I'm out in the sun on my phone.

Thanks
